On Friday, May 3rd, six bands shook Club 279 at the Hard Rock Cafe and raised over $22,000 for children with physical disabilities. Oui B. Jamon, The Grinn, Bora North, Dark Horse, The Shroud of Gaia and Superfire did battle in front of an all-star line-up of judges: Daryn Barry, co-owner of the Orange Lounge, Tyler Stewart of the Barenaked Ladies, Jeremy Taggart of Our Lady Peace, and producer, musician and artist rep, Andy Curran.
In an extremely close contest, in front of 350 people in attendance, The Shroud of Gaia narrowly edged out Bora North, both first-time performers at Pennzoil presents Rock for Dimes Toronto. Every band was acknowledged for their contributions, and Superfire got special mention for revving up the crowd as the first band up.
Maie Pauts from boom 97.3 did a fantastic job as the evening’s host. Guests were treated to a special performance from singer-songwriter Justin Hines (www.justinhines.com), the pre-show entertainment. This summer, Justin will embark on an ambitious busking tour of North America in support of a number of charities, including March of Dimes.
Pennzoil representative Michelle Watt was on hand to speak about her company’s support of March of Dimes Canada, and to hear from CE participants Andrea Luciani, Bianca Salvo and Paul Manieri. Parents Brenda Agnew and Dana Florence also discussed how CE has helped their children become more independent and confident.
Pennzoil is the presenting sponsor for Rock for Dimes fundraisers in 2013 to celebrate the collective passion Pennzoil and so many others have for the love of cars and the freedom that people derive from their automobiles.
All proceeds benefit March of Dimes Canada’s Conductive Education® (CE) program and will support the Academy of Conductive Education (ACE), an early intervention program for young children living with neuro-motor disabilities. CE is an innovative program that blends elements of education and rehabilitation to improve the independence, mobility and confidence of children with disabilities, and has been especially beneficial to kids with cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and developmental apraxia.
