Insider Profile | George Ergatoudis
Former Head of Music | BBC Radio 1

With over 20 years of experience in the radio industry, an in-depth knowledge and passion for contemporary music across genres, an excellent music industry reputation and a gift for spotting new music talent, George Ergatoudis was appointed Head of Music at BBC Radio One in October 2005, adding 1Xtra to his duties in April 2009. At Radio 1 he has championed a diverse range of artists including Mumford & Sons, Plan B, Tinie Tempah, Jake Bugg, Ben Howard and Bruno Mars.

Born in Wales, George grew up in Leeds prior to moving to London in 1989, latching on as a Trainee Producer at BBC Radio One (where he produced the award-winning documentary "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life: History of the Remix"). In 2000 George was tasked with developing a new digital radio station for the BBC. Dubbed 1Xtra, the first station aimed at black music fans in the UK was an instant success, becoming the initial British outlet to play music from American hip-hop artists 50 Cent and Pharrell, alongside domestic successes Dizzee Rascal, Ms. Dynamite and more.
