Carel Hoffmann fell out of a promising electrical engineering career into the loving arms of rock & roll and the OppiKoppi festival. Together with the Bornmann family, he started and shaped what was initially just a band weekend affair for a couple of hundred people into what became South Africa's biggest outdoor festival of its kind: OppiKoppi. Now playing host to seven or eight stages and 20,000 people in a camping environment, OppiKoppi has won numerous South African awards and was nominated by the British media as one of the Top 10 festivals in the world.

Apart from OppiKoppi however, Carel and the Hilltop Live team have created a network of companies and relationships which span almost the entire width of the South African music industry. The Hilltop Live group not only does their own events but often produces or find sponsors for events such as KKNK, Oesfees, Kirkwood, and many, many more. But possibly Carel's biggest contribution to humankind was the development of a phone-based beer ordering service, which delivered beers by drone to your campsite at OppiKoppi - a world first!
